Based
near Northwich, Acton Bridge is a great place for
exploring a number of routes. Travelling north,
you meet the canal where it all started – the
Bridgewater Canal, which takes you lock-free to Manchester.
From there you can travel to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal,
or continue on the Cheshire Ring via the Peak Forest
and Macclesfield. As well as the vibrant city of Manchester
(where parts of the canal are currently being cleaned
up), this is a beautiful route with constantly changing
scenery. From south of the base you can travel on the
Four Counties Ring, or meander up to Chester and beyond
to the Ellesmere Port Boat Museum.

Based
on the breathtaking Llangollen Canal in North Wales,
Chirk’s lovely marina is situated on the site
of the Chirk Golf & Country Club. With much to
offer, the Llangollen Canal meanders gracefully through
the beautiful countryside where the World Heritage
Site – the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct - spans across
the Dee Valley. uch a feat of engineering is sure
to take your breath away. Cruise the Montgomery Canal,
recently reopened to boats for the first time in
over fifty years, where a four mile length of the
canal has been restored giving you the chance to
cruise this once dormant, sleepy waterway.

Based at the Falkirk Wheel, one of the most stunning
backdrops anywhere on the canals, we are ideally sited
half way between Edinburgh and Glasgow.
The Falkirk Wheel is 115 feet high – the equivalent
height of eight double decker buses and offers visitors
a real treat. It is 115 feet wide and 100 feet long.
The wheel will lift loads of 600 tonnes (300 at each
end) and stands in a 330 feet wide circular basin with
moorings for over 20 boats. Before re-development, the
site was a deep open cast pit left behind by mining which
ended in the early 1980s.

The
London base is an ideal place from which to explore
London
and its attractions at an easy pace. It combines
the best of the sights along with a more relaxed lifestyle.
The Grand Union Canal Paddington Arm will take you through
the heart of London, past most of the attractions of
the big city and many hidden gems conveniently accessed
via the waterways. Further afield, though easily reached
via London transport you can see Buckingham Palace, the
London museums and art galleries, Covent Garden’s
famous markets or go and see a west end show. The London
Underground and bus connections will take you to wherever
you want to go off the water and at the end of the day
you leave the city behind and return to the peace of
the waterways. |

Ideally situated at the head of the
Oxford Canal, Napton is a base for a large number of
interesting routes. The Warwickshire Ring, for the
more energetic, contrasts the beautiful countryside
around Warwick with city life and industry through
Birmingham and Spaghetti Junction. Trips of beauty
and interest can also be achieved, including Stratford-on-Avon,
Oxford, Snarestone, or a visit to the Waterways Museum
at Stoke Bruerne, depending on the number of locks
you wish to negotiate.

Situated on the re-developed National Garden Festival Site, this is one of the most popular Black Prince starting points. Close by there is an exciting Water World, dry ski-slope, multi-screen cinema, ten pin bowling and shopping centre… and that is before you get on the water!
The variety of routes is wide with the Cheshire Ring and Four Counties being favourites. You travel through some of the waterways’ most beautiful scenery, along with the pure contrast of the Potteries, Royal Doulton, Cheddleton Mill and Wedgwood industries.

Situated in a lovely spot, Stoke Prior is the base
for those who want a more active holiday, being at the
bottom of the Tardebigge flight of locks. It is a base
of contrasts, with routes taking in the Rivers Severn
and Avon, as well as a number of different canals. Equally
it covers beautiful countryside as well as cities such
as Birmingham and Worcester. Several rings can be completed
from here, with the Stourport Ring being the most popular. |
